Welcome to the Birmingham Jazz height of the summer update! We have been busy this month listening out for live jazz to bring to Birmingham .This has included attending the BBC Jazz Awards on Wednesday 23rd July. Please click here to read Tony's thoughts on the prestigious awards night.
We were also invited to The Big Chill Festival last weekend and highlights included The Matthew Herbert Big Band featuring the amazing Eska. Also performing were Babel stars and Mercury Music Prize nominees Portico Quartet .Other great performances at the festival were two impromptu acoustic sets from Birmingham's own Lizzy Parks. This was in preparation for her album launch on Tru Thoughts on Friday October 3rd at Town Hall Birmingham alongside Big Chill headliners The Heritage Orchestra. See below for full details and tickets.
July also saw the first of the Jazz Club Summer Specials at The Rainbow. The first featured The Sub Ensemble performing in the outside stage area to a great crowd on a beautiful summer night. Just what the Jazz Club Summer Specials are all about!
Jazz Club will continue throughout the summer and autumn taking place on every last Wednesday of the month. The next one features Chris Bowden's The Tomorrow Band on Wednesday 27th August at 9.30pm.Entry is still only £3.

AFTER LAST YEAR’S RUNAWAY HIT COVER OF “SEXUAL HEALING”, THIS GANG OF BRASS REALLY GOT PEOPLE TALKING, BACKED UP WITH THE BRILLIANT LP %u2028“ROCK WITH THE…HOT 8 BRASS BAND”
THE TEN MEMBERS OF THE HOT 8 BRASS BAND ARE ALL FROM NEW ORLEANS AND FORMED IN 1995, THEY HAVE AN UNMISTAKABLE JAZZ SPIRIT AND A SIGNIFICANT STORY TO THEIR WORK. THEY RECENTLY APPEARED IN SPIKE LEE’S POIGNANT DOCUMENTARY ‘WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE’ (2006). THE FILM CAPTURES THE ANGER AND DESPAIR SURROUNDING ONE OF THE MOST HORRIFIC NATURAL DISASTERS IN US HISTORY. HURRICANE KATRINA IN 2005 BROKE A LOT OF BOUNDARIES BETWEEN GENERATIONS AND CLASS DIVIDES. THIS IS APPARENT IN THE SOUND OF THE HOT 8 WHO BRING ELEMENTS OF MODERN, TRADITIONAL AND URBAN MUSIC TOGETHER AND CREATE A UNIQUE, NEW CLASS OF BRASS MUSIC.
THE BAND EMBODIES THE HIP HOP CULTURE AND ENERGY IN THE NEW ORLEANS MUSIC SCENE FOR EXAMPLE, THEY ARE INVOLVED IN LOCAL SECOND-LINE PARADES. THESE ARE MUSIC BATTLES OR FACE OFFS WITH LOCAL JAZZ BANDS ON THE STREETS. BRASS BANDS FIGHT IT OUT FOR THE LARGEST CROWD LISTENING TO THEIR MUSIC, THE ONE WITH THE MOST FEET AT THE END WINS.
